Book Club: Mark Z. Danielewski – House of Leaves

Lukupiirien paikka vaihtuu! Koska vanha klubihuoneemme Mechelininkatu 3D:ssä ei ole enää käytettävissä, HYYn kiinteistöbisneksistä johtuen, tämän viikon lukupiiri järjestetään piknikinä Väinämöisen puistossa torstaina 21.5. klo 18. Puistosta voit etsiä HYSFKiläisen näköisiä ihmisiä, tai jos eksyt niin voit kysyä tarkempaa sijaintia lukupiiritirehtööriltä numerosta 0503755882. Näillä näkymin kesän lukupiirit järjestetään sään salliessa piknikeinä ja huonolla säällä Oodi-kirjastossa.

Torstaille 21.5. klo 18 luetaan Mark Z. Danielewskin ainutlaatuinen kulttikirja House of Leaves (2000), joka on paitsi romaani myös visuaalinen taideteos huomiota herättävien taittoratkaisujensa ansiosta. Muun muassa Stephen King ja Joe Hill ovat nimenneet sen tämän vuosituhannen merkittävimmäksi kauhuromaaniksi. Samoin lukupiirimme kymmenvuotisjuhlassa, kun lukupiiriläisiltä kysyttiin heidän suosikkejaan lukupiirin kymmenen vuoden taipaleelta, House of Leaves keräsi mainintoja, vaikka 709-sivuisena järkäleenä se jäi monelta kesken viime kerralla. Otetaan se siis uusiksi, kunnollisella lukuajalla. Mutta ensimmäisenä haasteena ovat ikuiset varausjonot, kannattaa siis mahdollisimman nopeasti klikkailla itsensä varausjonoihin kaupunginkirjastoon (27 kappaletta, 109 varausta) tai yliopiston kirjastoon (2 kappaletta, 0 varausta), tai sitten kirjan voi vaikka ostaa, se nimittäin näyttää aina hyvältä kirjahyllyssä.

Book clubs have a new location! Our old club room at Mechelininkatu 3D is no longer available because of HYY’s unfortunate real estate deals, so this week’s book club appears in the form of a picnic, in Väinämöinen Park, on Thursday May 21st at 6 pm. You can either look for the HYSFK people or if you get lost, you can ask the book club ringmaster at 0503755882 where exactly we are. The current plan is to organize the summer book clubs in the form of picnics if the weather is nice, or indoors at Oodi Library if the weather is not nice.

For Thursday May 21st at 6 pm, we read Mark Z. Danielewski’s one-of-a-kind cult book House of Leaves (2000), which is not just a novel but also a work of visual art, thanks to its bizarre layout. It has been named the most significant horror novel of this millennium by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Likewise, at the tenth anniversary of our book club, when people were asked to name their favorites among the books we’d read over the past ten years, some mentioned House of Leaves. On our previous read, many of us didn’t yet reach the end of this 709-page tome, so now we include it in the book club again, this time with proper reading time. Library availability is the first challenge, though, since the queues on this book are eternal, so click yourself fast into the queues in either the city library (27 copies, 109 reservations) or university library (2 copies, 0 reservations), or you could just buy it, since it looks good on any bookshelf.
