Events
In addition to the regular meetings of our book club and writing group, we organize plenty of other events such as movie nights, board game nights and picnics. We go on excursions to see interesting movies and theatre productions. Our annual traditions include Star Trek and Star Wars days, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Picnic and The Long Dark Beer-Time of the Soul.
You can come to our events even if you’re not a member. Almost all our events are free, and even on our excursions we usually give our members an extra discount on the tickets. Some events, such as movie excursions, require sign-up in advance, but the instructions are always in the announcement.
Upcoming events can be seen from the calendar You can also get all announcements from the email list and Discord server. You can also subscribe to the event calendar: Google, webcal
Book Club
Since 2016, the book club has met almost every other Thursday to discuss scifi, fantasy and other weird fiction. The announcements come a few weeks in advance, to give everyone time to get each book and read it. On a few occasions, we’ve also had author guests.
You can find a list of works we’ve read at the book club at this link (although most titles are in Finnish).
Writing Group
The writing group meets on Discord every Wednesday at 6:30 pm and face-to-face about once a month. You can come there to work on your own project, participate in prompt-based writing exercises, or even just to study.
Sometimes the writing group also creates content for the Marvin magazine.
Club Nights
⚠️ Due to HYY’s real estate misadventures, the old clubroom at Mechelinkatu 3D is no longer in use. For now, club nights are on hold!
Our club meets every Thursday starting at 6 pm at our club room, except on April 30th, December 24th and 25th. At the club nights, you can join our club or borrow books from our library.
Mafia
Mafia, or the biweekly meeting of the Helsinki area fandom, takes place on Thursdays of odd weeks from 6 pm onwards at St. Urho’s Pub (Museokatu 10).
Mafia is the place to meet local fans and occasional guests from provinces and sometimes even abroad. Everyone interested in science fiction, fantasy, horror or anything similar is welcome.
Cons and Fairs
HYSFK, usually together with the Helsinki Science Fiction Society (HSFS), maintains a table at various bigger events, such as the Helsinki Book Fair, Finncon, KauhuCon, and Ropecon. At our table, you can join the club, or buy overall patches, badges, books, and of course Marvin magazines. Members can come get the latest issue of Marvin for free.
The club has also participated in organizing Finncons in Helsinki.
